Infant and Toddler Oral Care for the Dental Team

A. Jeffrey Wood, DDS
Professor & Chairman, Department of Pediatric Dentistry
University of the Pacific School of Dentistry

Dentistry is facing some radical changes in how we are expected to care for our youngest patients, and some enormous opportunities for helping these patients and their families toward better oral health. Our knowledge base has exploded, resulting in a new paradigm in early childhood caries. We have the potential for collaboration with our medical colleagues in ways which we have never had before.

More and more parents are seeking oral care for their infants and toddlers thanks to better understanding of pediatric oral health. Young children are easy to work with and the potential benefits of early care can literally be life-altering for them and their families. As primary oral care providers dentists and their office teams need to be comfortable accepting the challenge of caring for this portion of our population.

As respected members of our community we serve as a vital information resource for our friends, colleagues and others. There are important messages to be shared with our community about the oral care of the youngest among us.

The goal of this presentation was to make dentists and the entire office team aware of the oral health needs of infants and toddlers, as well as give attendees the necessary tools to care for these young children and enjoy themselves while doing it!

This presentation covered:

  • Changes in public and professional awareness of the need for early childhood oral care and how those changes impact contemporary dental practice
  • Early Childhood Caries (ECC): etiology, demographics, predisposing factors and recognition
  • Practical office strategies for managing early childhood exams and care including: implementation in the office setting, patient risk assessment, prenatal counseling, first dental visit and subsequent dental visits
  • Useful techniques including: communication tips, knee-to-knee technique, fluoride varnish, alternative restorative technique (A.R.T.)
